The Chinese Medicine Hospital (CMH) and Government Chinese Medicines Testing Institute (GCMTI) in Hong Kong represents a transformative architectural milestone, establishing Hong Kong’s first integrated “Chinese Medicine Hub.” The design transcends mere functionality by embodying the ancient philosophical principles of “Yin and Yang” and the “Five Elements (Wu Xing) – Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, Earth”, which inform every aspect of its form, space, and materiality.
The masterplan organizes the CMH and GCMTI as two distinct yet complementary volumes, framing a Central Medicinal Plant Garden to create a harmonious “campus on a hill.” This integration of architecture and therapeutic landscape forms the heart of the healing environment. The building envelope is articulated through a layered façade system of rhythmic aluminium fins, high-performance glazing, and textured cladding—including GRC panels that evoke rammed earth—resulting in a dignified, contemporary expression that engages sensitively with its coastal and urban context.
A central architectural innovation is the reinterpretation of the traditional Chinese medicine cabinet (bai zi gui) into a modular, perforated aluminium screen system. This screen defines the primary passageway “Tao” filtering light and casting dynamic shadows throughout the interior circulation spine. It extends seamlessly from interior to exterior, becoming a canopy that physically and symbolically connects the two buildings, embodying the journey of healing.
Internally, spatial organization demonstrates exceptional clarity. A rigorously segregated circulation strategy separates public, inpatient, staff, and automated robotic logistics flows, ensuring operational efficiency and dignity. The material palette—natural textures, warm timber, rammed earth, and controlled light—creates calming, sensorially rich spaces. From the triple-height atrium crowned with a symbolic oculus to the residential-scaled wards, each space reduces anxiety and promotes wellbeing.
This project stands as a profound synthesis of cultural heritage, human-centered design, and environmental stewardship, offering a visionary model for the future of integrative healthcare architecture.
