Inspired by the adaptive behavior of flower petals, Blooming Façade reimagines the building envelope as a responsive system that evolves with its environment. Applied to the retrofit of the iconic Capitol Records Building in Hollywood, the project translates the growth, rotation, and opening mechanisms of petals into a computational façade driven by solar exposure.

A parametric system distributes attraction points across the building envelope according to varying levels of solar radiation. Around these points, individual units twist, rotate, and change in density and openness. Areas receiving greater solar exposure develop denser formations and increased shading, while naturally protected areas remain more open to preserve daylight. The result is a façade that responds locally to environmental conditions rather than acting as a uniform enclosure.

Beyond solar performance, the new skin becomes an inhabitable extension of the existing building. Supported by a lightweight gridshell connected to the existing floor structure, the façade expands outward to form balconies, thermal buffers, public terraces, and vertical gardens. Variations in porosity and depth respond to different interior programs, creating new relationships between indoor and outdoor space while transforming the existing tower without erasing its original structure.

The system is conceived as a modular assembly incorporating additive manufacturing and bio-based materials, enabling efficient fabrication, transportation, installation, and future replacement. By integrating biomimicry, computational design, environmental performance, and adaptive reuse, Blooming Façade transforms a static building envelope into a dynamic interface between architecture and climate—allowing an existing urban landmark to bloom again.
