The project is a new residential unit. The homeowner, a senior executive in the semiconductor tech industry whose work environment is rational and cold, envisioned a starkly different home. Though he had never visited Europe, he long yearned for the aged depth of historic English castles and the warm, relaxed lifestyle of country manors. Inspired by this vision, the designer incorporated classic elements—such as crown moldings, arched doorways, timber structures, and vintage tiles—into the interior. Rather than pursuing a literal replica of a historical setting, the design captures the spirit of classical architecture while re-proportions and adjusts functions, ensuring the 62.8 square meters residence retains the bright comfort of modern living.
The core of the space lies in translating the architectural impression of a European castle to a residential scale. The designer used staggered cabinetry, three-dimensional wall panel moldings, and arched openings to establish a visual rhythm akin to that of a classical estate. Built-ins become part of the interior architecture, adding rich layers within the limited footprint through varied heights and proportional divisions. At the entryway, three types of tiles are arranged in an alternating pattern with corner accent tiles, infusing a warm, tactile, terracotta-like quality into the rhythmic layout. The TV wall in the open-living and dining area features vintage tiles and arched masonry detailing, while a hand-painted mosaic pendant light above the table serves as a focal point, its colored glass evoking stained-glass cathedral windows.
A large overhead beam in the dining area originally created visual oppression. The designer introduced solid wood faux beams, drawing inspiration from the soaring timber-framed trusses of European castles and capturing their essence through a herringbone-like configuration. Air conditioning return grilles were also integrated between the faux beams, balancing proper air circulation with handcrafted warmth.
