Humans have skillfully crafted shelters from wood since the Neolithic Age. Archetypal log cabins have always offered refuge from wind and rain, a truth embodied by the enduring presence of diverse timber and stone structures nestled in mountain regions worldwide. Tucked away in remote forests, these humble abodes serve as arks of sanctuary for wilderness travelers confronting extreme conditions. This very project - the Songhua Lake 1962 Cabin - stands as such a haven: a waystation that marries alpine exhilaration with tranquil stewardship of the landscape. Every aspect of its design and construction adheres to a philosophy of minimal disturbance to the site, fostering a symbiotic existence between native wood and stone and the enveloping woodland, and framing a poignant conversation between humankind and the natural world.

Perched on a mountaintop terrace between the upper terminals of Gondolas C and D within Jilin’s Songhua Lake Ski Resort, the waystation sits at 720 meters above sea level. Its name pays homage to the resort’s founding year of 1962. Clinging to the contours of the hillside, the two-story structure comprises distinct volumes. The upper story, framed with Douglas Fir Glulam (glue-laminated timber), exudes warmth and comfort through its pure timber materiality, dissolving visually into the wooded surroundings. Below, a concrete volume accommodates service facilities and public restrooms. This substantial concrete plinth resonates with the existing rocky outcrops, appearing as if a secret grotto naturally emerging from the mountainside.

A generous observation deck extends seamlessly from the cabin’s main floor, reaching out into the embrace of the forest. Bathed in the low, golden light of winter, its surfaces seem to glow. The deck’s form is conceived in dialogue with the main structure, nestling into the dramatic amphitheater formed by the summits anchoring Gondolas C and D. Projecting boldly over the void and hovering amidst the tree canopy, this cantilevered platform offers an unrivaled stage from which to witness the majestic spectacle of the setting sun.
