Design Concept
Situated in Puli, a Taiwanese town cradled by emerald peaks, The Twin Ode is more than a functional structure; it is a profound dialogue between local topography and contemporary architectural language. Inspired by the surrounding ridges, the design integrates nature’s organic contours and monumental textures into two four-story modern villas, harmonizing the built environment with the spiritual essence of the land.
Exterior Expression: Flowing Mountain Forms
The facade utilizes natural stone characterized by meticulous beveled-edge craftsmanship, reimagining the raw texture of mountain faces weathered by time. The second-floor balconies feature rhythmic, undulating curves that interpret the dynamic movement of overlapping mountain silhouettes. As light shifts through the seasons, the building acts as a vessel for light, capturing the changing atmospheres of mist, shadow, and sunlight, and transforming them into a rich and dynamic visual experience.
Sustainability: Climate Response & Circular Building Materials
• High-Performance Thermal Envelope
The exterior employs a stone dry-hanging system, creating an interstitial air cavity between the stone cladding and the primary structure. This layer serves as a natural thermal buffer, significantly minimizing heat transfer, maintaining a stable indoor microclimate, and reducing energy consumption.
• Passive Energy Design
The curvilinear balconies function as deep horizontal shading devices, blocking high-angle solar radiation during summer to mitigate heat gain. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows in the living areas and bedrooms maximize natural daylighting. Combined with strategic cross-ventilation, the design invites mountain breezes to circulate through the interior, decreasing reliance on artificial lighting and energy-intensive air conditioning.
• Circular Materiality
The balustrades and louvers are crafted from high-quality aluminum alloy and glass. These materials offer a lightweight, modern aesthetic while being fully recyclable, minimizing environmental impact and embodying the principles of a circular economy.
Through this synthesis of poetic form and environmental responsibility, The Twin Ode redefines the boundary between mountains and home.
