ORUHA Chair explores seating as an emotional and spatial experience through the concept of “waves,” translating continuous transitions between tension and release into a physical form. Rather than approaching a chair as a purely functional object, the project considers how sitting influences perception, attention, and one’s sense of place within shared environments.

Visually, ORUHA Chair presents a sculptural presence that engages with its surroundings. When used, however, the form responds directly to the body, allowing posture to settle naturally without rigid guidance. This contrast between outward sharpness and inward softness creates a subtle shift in awareness, encouraging moments of calm focus and reflection within everyday settings. The chair is intended to be both part of the space and a personal refuge, offering intimacy without isolation.

The form was realized by carving directly from solid wood using traditional Japanese hand tools. Rather than imposing a predetermined geometry, the final shape emerged through continuous interaction with the material. Balance, weight distribution, and surface transitions were adjusted through repeated physical testing, allowing the chair to achieve stability and comfort while maintaining a strong visual identity. The resulting geometry could not be achieved through industrial or automated processes, as its complexity relies on tactile judgment and material response.

Despite its expressive appearance, ORUHA Chair is designed for daily use. Structural integrity and durability were carefully considered to ensure safety and comfort over extended periods. Natural finishes preserve the warmth of the material and allow the surface to age gracefully through use, reinforcing a long-term relationship between object and user.

ORUHA Chair proposes furniture not as a passive utility, but as an active participant in shaping spatial atmosphere and human experience. Through use, it quietly alters how space is perceived, offering a place to pause, think, and reconnect with one’s surroundings.
