The project is located in Huli District, Xiamen, and draws inspiration from the aesthetics of Gulangyu’s International Architecture Complex. It integrates innovation within cultural inheritance, bridging tradition and the spirit of the Shanghai school to create a new classic. The 100-meter axis connecting the east and west clusters and the layout of two gardens with five courtyard entrances pay homage to century-old Minnan traditional residences. The main entrance, themed “Jade Seal Before the Hall,” references traditional elements such as secret-color porcelain, begonia cups, and scrolling patterns, integrating these into the central courtyard water feature modeled after the Huang Family Garden. The spatial structure draws on the symmetrical axis and gatehouse form of Haitang Hall, combining imported stone with intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship to create a dignified and richly layered entrance. The north and south courtyards showcase the contrast and integration of Chinese and Western culture. The mythical “Lion Spring” and “Phoenix Dignity” symbolize Eastern auspiciousness and Western strength through sculpture and form. The central flower hall recalls the elegance of Gulangyu’s historic “Ronggu Villa.” The island water courtyard takes inspiration from Shuzhuang Garden’s Canghai Garden, merging the leisurely rhythm of a Southeast Asian resort with the sequential narrative of traditional Eastern courtyards. The design features a central water axis, a pavilion with fluttering curtains, and jacaranda trees, creating an immersive spatial experience. Elements such as Baoxiang Flower Court and Yuanbao Water Court continue the theme of cultural synthesis. Baoxiang Court fuses Eastern floral symbolism and ritual with Western geometric proportions. Yuanbao Water Court, inspired by Huang Rongyuan Hall’s Treasure Gathering Garden, features symbolic water elements and a 3D-restored historic stone, celebrating nature’s richness. The project ultimately synthesizes the colors, forms, and spirit of Gulangyu, interpreting a century of Sino-Western cultural exchange into a serene, harmonious living environment.
