Xiù Qiú (Hydrangea) is more than a name; it’s a narrative of connection. In Chinese culture, it evokes the ancient tradition of tossing a silk ball to find a partner, symbolizing a fated encounter. This noodle house is designed as a vessel for such connections, a concept embodied in its signature dish: a single red noodle hidden amongst a bowl of white ones.
Tasked with transforming a 40-year-old former children's art studio, the design approach was not to erase its history but to celebrate its imperfections. The building’s aged character and leaky walls were not seen as flaws but as a canvas. Instead of a sterile renovation, the walls were stripped to their raw state, and the design team hand-applied layers of paint to create a rich, weathered patina. This hand-finished texture, combined with the preservation of original elements like the worn red staircase railing, immerses visitors in a space that feels authentically time-worn.
The design philosophy is a quiet rebellion against fast culture, reflecting the owner-chef's dedication to traditional, slow-cooked "Juan Cun" (military dependents' village) cuisine. The interior is a curated tapestry of salvaged materials and cherished antiques. Historic lamps, reclaimed cypress wood, and mismatched furniture create an ambiance that feels as if the restaurant has occupied this space for generations.
The most innovative feature is the interactive façade. Pulling the green slatted entrance door activates a hidden mechanism, bringing a traditional Chinese shadow puppet theatre (皮影戲) to life inside—a playful, kinetic sculpture that blends art with architecture.
Xiù Qiú is a sensory journey into the past. It is a space where the design intentionally recedes to become a textured backdrop for memory, community, and cuisine, creating an unreplicable experience where every detail tells a story.
