Situated in Shanghai, this 520-square-meter free-standing villa caters to a family of four's vacation needs through design centered around the "residential retreat" concept. The architectural scheme synthesizes Southern California's casual elegance with Shanghai's metropolitan sophistication, crafting a living environment that seamlessly integrates artistic curation, leisure functionality, and intergenerational bonding. The ground floor adopts an open-plan design, connecting an 8.5-meter grand living room, a double-height dining area, and integrated Western and Chinese kitchens. Hollow solid wood carved partitions enhance spatial privacy while maintaining visual transparency, allowing seamless family interaction from the entrance. A doorless design and fluid circulation create a relaxed atmosphere. The basement houses hobby zones (billiards, home theater, bar, dart area), featuring vintage Spanish factory tiles sourced from old workshops. These limited-edition tiles are strategically placed at the entrance and bar counter to form focal points, while custom display cabinets transform the homeowner’s collectibles into artistic installations. The second floor prioritizes comfort and privacy, with a master suite tailored to the owners’ habits and a study for quiet work. A double-height corridor fosters vertical interaction, strengthening family bonds. Wood and stone serve as core materials, showcasing texture through diverse craftsmanship. The garage entrance combines floor marquetry and storage to create a ceremonial arrival experience. The basement's niche ceramic tiles were strategically curated due to material constraints, concentrating their visual impact at the entryway and bar zone. These artisanal surfaces simultaneously honor the space's vintage-inspired foundation and introduce personalized design signatures through their patterned articulation, creating memorable spatial punctuation points. Breaking from traditional compartmentalization, the project envisions the villa as a "living theater," where each space facilitates emotional connection. The open public areas encourage shared cooking and relaxation, hobby zones honor personal interests, and private areas ensure tranquility. The design translates the family’s love for life into tangible details, transforming the villa into a haven of memories. It embodies the symbiotic relationship between residents and their environment.
By merging regional cultural influences, innovative functional scenarios, and artful display of collectibles, this vacation villa exemplifies how residential design can balance family needs with individual identities.
