Shidongzhang Historic Architecture Park, located in Xindian, New Taipei City, Taiwan, is a unique revitalization project centered on traditional Taiwanese siheyuan (courtyard-style) architecture. Notably adorned with vibrant chiaozhi pottery and painted clay sculptures, the buildings in the park were not originally situated here. In response to urban development pressures and the need for cultural preservation, the New Taipei City Government undertook a careful process of dismantling, relocating, and reconstructing these officially registered historic buildings.

More than a preservation effort, the park stands as a symbol of innovation in reimagining historical architecture in a contemporary urban context. It bridges past and present, offering the public an engaging, accessible way to reconnect with their heritage. To further activate the space and its cultural narrative, the city launched a year-long program titled “New Cultural Heritage, New Life”, featuring a curated special exhibition and a series of workshops, guided tours, and traditional craft experiences. The exhibition comprises four themed sub-sections:

Reviving the Past – Showcasing the transformation of ancestral halls into today’s cultural venue through archival documents, architectural fragments, and personal objects. The display traces both the physical reconstruction and the shifting cultural landscape of the local area.

Faces of Memory – A photo retrospective capturing emotional memories of residents through rare, historic images. Many of these photographs were preserved by heritage committee members, reflecting their deep commitment to cultural stewardship. The exhibit invites visitors to see buildings and artifacts not just as structures, but as vessels of lived history.

A Thousand Feelings – Featuring 19 master artisans from New Taipei City, this section highlights traditional crafts such as drum-making, ink production, gong casting, and wood carving. Through interactive design, immersive storytelling, and VR technology, the exhibition transcends the five senses to create a meaningful connection between past craftsmanship and modern life.

Resonance of Craft – Focused on the traditional techniques of gong and drum making, this exhibit reveals intimate ties between craft, daily life, and temple culture. Interactive installations simulate a live gong ensemble, offering visitors a visceral experience of the artistry and rhythm embedded in local traditions.
