At its core, Buoy believes that we must start imitating nature by putting everything we use into a circle of reuse, because, if we don’t, we are going to burn this place down. We earnestly want to take the lead in making choices around recycling and reuse a top level consumer value. Consumers won’t take on that value if it means they can’t have nice things, thus we take a design-first posture towards branding. In addition to making our own products, we want to partner with manufacturers seeking to make their products more sustainable and design forward.
Buoy set out to make the most sustainable water bottle on the market. Our target customers are the environmentally aware amongst the millions of people who buy reusable bottles every year.
Every bottle is made from 100% recycled food safe ocean-bound plastic. Our plastic is collected from rivers and streams in south Mexico and Haiti then brought to the US for processing and manufacturing. If you credit us with the carbon impact of the plastic collected, each bottle is carbon negative. But mostly, it’s a cool bottle.
The processing center separates the undyed “natural” chips of milk bottles, horchata bottles, etc. from non-target plastics. We purchase the High Density PolyEthylene (HDPE) or #2 plastic, an olefin, like polypropylene #5, together the most food safe plastics. The monomers have no phenol groups of benzene rings, the compounds that may cause endocrine disruption.
